In Sewing 101, you will learn essential sewing machine and basic sewing skills, including:
Parts of the sewing machine
Learn the names and functions of the key parts of your sewing machine so you can use it more confidently and troubleshoot simple issues.
How to thread your sewing machine
Step-by-step guidance on threading the top of the machine correctly.
How to wind and insert a bobbin
Understand bobbin winding, placement, and how it affects your stitches.
How to operate your sewing machine
Practice core techniques such as:
- Lock-off (securing your stitches)
- Pivoting at corners
- Sewing with an accurate seam allowance
- Overcasting the edge of fabric to prevent fraying
How to take body measurements for garment sewing
Learn how to measure yourself properly so you can choose the correct size when sewing garments.
How to read a sewing pattern
Go through the key parts of a pattern envelope and instructions so you can:
- Select the correct pattern size
- Identify fabric and notions requirements
- Purchase the correct supplies for a future sewing class or project
What basic sewing supplies you need and how to use them
Review essential tools (such as seam rippers, bobbins, needles, and more) and how they are used in everyday sewing.

Class Details

- Schedule: First Saturday of each month, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
- Location: Sewing Machine Warehouse Classroom
This recurring monthly class is a great starting point before joining our more advanced or project-based sewing classes.
What to Bring
Please bring the following to class:
- Sewing machine in good working order
- Foot control
- Presser feet that came with your machine
- All basic supplies that came with your machine, including:
- Bobbins
- Seam ripper
- Screwdriver
- Scissors
- Any additional tools and accessories included with your machine
- Thread
If you are unsure whether your machine is in working condition, we recommend having it serviced before attending so you can make the most of the class.
