Celebrating our 45th Year

1976 Scott's House of Vacuums & Sewing Machines

Scott Goodman, 23, opened for business on leap-day, 1976. Gerald Ford was president, America was celebrating the Bi-Centennial, "Rocky" was playing at local theaters.  Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniack had just released the first Apple hobby computer from their garage in Palo Alto. Digital watches featured glowing red numerals.  Citizens Band radios, purchased at the local Radio Shack were fun diversions for long road trips.  Personal computers, cell phones and much of the technology we rely on had not been invented yet.

One year later, a second location was opened in North Hollywood.  Scott offered value to customers by making volume purchases, while growing to 6 locations throughout greater Los Angeles and Orange County areas.  In the 1980s, Scott expanded, by opening sewing machine departments inside Fabric Warehouse stores and changing the name to Sewing Machine Warehouse; offering major brands, like Singer, at affordable warehouse prices.  Our internet personality, kneedle.com, was added in 2005. Sewing Machine Warehouse is still located on the same corner, 45 years later.

Much has changed: Rebuilt vacuums and refurbished sewing machines were popular, economical values in a time of high inflation and economic uncertainty.  Sewing machines were used for mending and garment construction. Free-arm sewing machines were a small part of the marketplace, most sewing machines were purchased with a cabinet and chair.  Quilting by machine, overlock machines, home embroidery machines and electronic models would come later.

Today, size is everything; sewing machines are much larger. The state-of-the-art in sewing machines, reflect the 6th generation of technology. Top-of-the-line models can scan and create embroidery files, communicate with personal devices through WiFi an can create beautiful professional-quality embroidery in a 14" square field.  Premium vacuum cleaners can quietly and efficiently, reduce dust and allergen emissions to clean-room standards.

Scott Goodman as "Great Scott" is a featured writer in "Designs in Machine Embroidery" magazine and was recently inducted into the Sewing Dealer and Vacuum Dealer, VDTA/SDTA Hall of Fame for almost 50 years of contribution to the industry.

Our passionate staff is factory trained, undergoing constant product and technical education. They will be guide your guide when selecting the right product that matches your ability and budget. Sewing Machine Warehouse represents and supports every major brands: Baby Lock, Bernina, Brother, Husqvarna Viking, Janome, Juki, Miele, Pfaff, Sebo, Singer and more.
